Youji in Kimono

Description

About damn time! This piece took me longer than it should've and I gotta say I have very mixed feelings about the process. It feels like a failure but also a success to me. It was a failure in the sense that I just could not paint it the way I wanted to. The colors I chose just didn't work, I would constantly delete layers and end up back in square one. I was frustrated for some time. After analyzing it a little close, I thought "Hm...maybe painting it won't work but this piece definitely begs for some texture on it. Let's try it." I was going for a bit of a style by Ayumi Kasai (I absolutely love how she places texture in her pieces!) and tried out using some texture myself, and I gotta say, it only went well after that. So in this manner, it was a success.

I have not intention of drawing only in flat colors, but I definitely not confident in my painting skills. Color and value simply terrifies me. I need to do more studies -.- By the way, the textures I used here were created by the lovely Gimei in case you would like to use them as well!

Do visit their page: gimei.deviantart.com/
The lovely textures used: gimei.deviantart.com/art/Japan…

Okay...I am done for today. Kimchii out! Sleep

this turned out really nicely!! I find the colors/pattern you chose for the kimono to be really fitting for youji's complexion the warm tone of this art piece in general :)

the only thing i'd have to say that perhaps you would need practice on are hands in general (which hey its a difficult part to grasp), I really love the detail you added to the hand here but it feels a bit disproportionate to the rest of Youji's body, and I'd love to see you practice them more because you are definitely getting good at them! Perhaps try and practice with how the joints work and loosely sketch them? Because hands are a wonderful way of expressionism in art and you totally have the right feeling down !!

Anyways I just wanted to give you some thoughts about it, I hope to see more work from you c: lovely piece and good work
